The 9 Centers
The energy anatomy of your Human Design.
In Human Design, the bodygraph contains nine centers — each corresponding to a specific biological function and a distinct aspect of your experience. Centers can be defined (colored in, meaning you have consistent access to that energy) or open (white, meaning you receive and amplify that energy from others). Understanding your centers is the foundation of understanding your design.
Head Center
Top of the bodygraph

The Head Center sits at the very top of the bodygraph and is one of two pressure centers in Human Design (the other being the Root). It is the center of inspiration, questions, and mental pressure. It does not think — it generates the questions and doubts that fuel the thinking process in the Ajna Center below. When you feel a nagging urge to figure something out, to answer a question, or to resolve uncertainty, that pressure is coming from the Head Center.

The Ajna Center is the conceptualizing and processing center of the bodygraph. While the Head Center provides the pressure and inspiration to think, the Ajna is where that thinking actually happens. It is where we form opinions, process information, create mental frameworks, and develop certainty or doubt. The Ajna does not generate original ideas — it receives the pressure from above and organizes it into structured thought.

The Throat Center is the hub of manifestation and communication in Human Design. Every center in the bodygraph seeks expression through the Throat. It is through this center that energy becomes word, action, and creation. Whether you are speaking, writing, building, or doing, the Throat Center is the gateway through which inner reality becomes outer reality. It has more gates than any other center — eleven — because it is the central junction of the entire design.

The G Center is the center of identity, love, and direction in Human Design. It is sometimes called the Self Center or the Ji Center. This is where your sense of "who am I" lives — your identity, your role, your direction in life, and your capacity for love. It is also connected to the Magnetic Monopole, the organizing force that holds your design together and pulls you along your correct path through life. The G Center is the driver of your vehicle; it determines where you are going.

The Heart Center — also known as the Will Center or Ego Center — is the smallest motor in the bodygraph, yet it carries enormous influence. It governs willpower, self-worth, material resources, and the ability to make and keep promises. This center operates in a work-rest cycle: it is not designed for sustained effort but for focused bursts of willpower followed by necessary recovery. In the tribal circuitry of Human Design, the Heart Center is about material support, loyalty, and the commitments that hold communities together.

The Sacral Center is the most powerful motor in the bodygraph. It generates sustainable life force energy — the energy that builds, creates, sustains, and regenerates. When defined, it gives you the capacity for consistent work, creativity, and vitality. The Sacral is also a response center: it communicates through gut sounds and sensations, giving you a built-in guidance system for what is correct to commit your energy to. This is the center that distinguishes Generators and Manifesting Generators from all other Types.

The Splenic Center is the body's oldest awareness center — the seat of instinct, intuition, survival, and immune health. It operates entirely in the present moment, giving you instantaneous reads on what is safe, healthy, and correct. Unlike the Ajna (which processes over time) or the Solar Plexus (which moves in waves), the Spleen speaks once, quietly, and in the now. It is the body's primal radar, scanning the environment for threats and opportunities with a speed and accuracy that the mind cannot match.

The Emotional Center — also called the Solar Plexus — is both an awareness center and a motor. It is the most powerful awareness center in the Human Design system, and approximately 50% of the population has it defined. This center generates the emotional wave — a biochemical rhythm that moves between hope and pain, pleasure and despair, excitement and disappointment. The wave is not caused by external events; it is an internal tide that colors everything you experience. When defined, there is no truth in the moment — only clarity that comes after riding the full wave.

The Root Center is one of two pressure centers in the bodygraph (the other being the Head Center at the top). It sits at the very bottom and generates the pressure to do, to act, to move, to start, and to evolve. This is the center of adrenaline, stress, and the drive that fuels forward momentum. The Root pressure is physical — it is felt in the body as restlessness, urgency, or a compulsion to get things done. Whether this pressure is a source of healthy motivation or chronic stress depends entirely on how you relate to it.
